More Than a Picnic: A Day of Connection, Community, and Hope

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments happen when families simply have the opportunity to come together, share a laugh, and feel understood.

That was the heart behind TABI Oasis’s 1st Annual Community Picnic, a special day dedicated to bringing together families affected by traumatic and acquired brain injuries. With 35 attendees, the event was filled with fun, friendship, and a powerful reminder that no family has to navigate the challenges of brain injury alone.

A Day Filled with Smiles

From cotton candy and face painting to music, delicious food from a food truck, and exciting door prizes, there was something for everyone to enjoy!

Families had the opportunity to relax, connect, and create happy memories together. Ten door prizes added a little extra excitement to the day, while four gas cards provided practical support to families.

But beyond the activities and treats, something even more important was happening. Families were building relationships, sharing experiences, and finding comfort in being surrounded by others who understand the unique challenges that come with brain injury.

For families whose lives have been changed in an instant, these moments of connection can mean everything.

Finding Strength Through Shared Experiences

One of the day’s meaningful highlights was hearing from a guest speaker representing the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance.

The speaker shared an important reminder:

“If you’ve seen one brain injury, you’ve seen one brain injury.”

Every brain injury is different. Every family’s journey is unique. And while no two experiences are exactly alike, there is tremendous comfort in knowing that others understand the uncertainty, challenges, and emotions that often accompany recovery.

Events like the Community Picnic help create a space where families can feel seen, heard, and supported without having to explain everything they have been through.

Making a Difference When It Matters Most

At TABI Oasis, we believe support should extend far beyond the initial crisis.

Our commitment to families is simple: Here for You in 5 Days, 5 Months, 5 Years and Beyond.

Through emergency financial assistance, practical resources, and opportunities for connection, we strive to ease some of the burdens families face following a brain injury.

Feedback from surveyed past recipients reinforced just how important that support can be. 100% of respondents reported that TABI Oasis financial assistance helped reduce their stress, with timely assistance playing a particularly important role.

The Community Picnic was another way to carry that mission forward, reminding families that support doesn’t end when they leave the hospital or when the immediate crisis has passed.

Sometimes support looks like help with gas, meals, or lodging. Other times, it looks like a conversation with someone who understands, a shared laugh, or an afternoon spent making memories.

All of it matters.

A Heartfelt Thank You

An event like this wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of those who believe in our mission.

We extend a special thank-you to Fairview, our main picnic sponsor, for helping make this wonderful day possible.

We are also grateful to the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance for sharing valuable insight and encouragement, and to everyone who helped organize, support, and participate in the event.

Most importantly, thank you to the families who joined us. Your strength, resilience, and willingness to connect with others are what make the TABI Oasis community so special.

Stronger Families, Brighter Tomorrows

Our first Community Picnic may have lasted only a day, but we hope the connections made and memories created will continue to make a difference long afterward.

Because at TABI Oasis, we know that healing and recovery aren’t journeys families should have to travel alone.

And sometimes, a little sunshine, a shared meal, and a welcoming community can remind us just how powerful it is to have someone walking beside us.

Together, we’re building stronger families and brighter tomorrows.
